Alaskan Cruise Pros, Cons & Gluten-Free on Celebrity
If you’ve just checked out my DIY Alaska Shore Excursions Itinerary, you might be wondering: Is taking an actual cruise really the best way to see Alaska? Let’s dive into weighing the alaskan cruise pros cons.
I hadn’t cruised since I was in high school with my parents, but when they wanted to plan an Alaska trip, I was definitely intrigued. Unpacking just once, having your floating hotel carry you from port to port, and settling into a nice daily routine has a distinct comfort to it. Plus, on a ship like Celebrity, you get great entertainment, bars, live music, and effortless transit.
After experiencing it firsthand, I have thoughts. Taking a cruise is genuinely one of the most efficient ways to see multiple coastal ports in Alaska—especially since most of them only require a day to hit the top highlights. But it isn’t without its quirks.
Let’s break down the real alaskan cruise pros, cons and paired with my honest guide on how to survive and thrive on a gluten-free diet while onboard Celebrity Cruises.
Part 1: The Pros and Cons of an Alaskan Cruise
The Pros: Why It Works
- Unpack Once, Travel Far: Having your room, routine, and amenities move with you through the Inside Passage is undeniably relaxing. It’s easy to get to all these lovely coastal cities where they would otherwise require a small flight in most cases.
- Built-In Wildlife Viewing: Some of the best moments happen right from the ship. Sitting on the back of the boat at the Sunset Bar watching humpback whales or cruising past towering glaciers is an experience you simply don’t get on a standard land trip.
- Effortless Port Hopping: Because the nature is the true star of Alaska, getting dropped off right at the edge of multiple coastal towns lets you sample the region efficiently before heading inland for spots like Denali or Kenai Fjords.

The Cons: The Reality of “Cruise Crowds”
- The Mass Disembarkation Gridlock: The biggest downside? You become a cruise person. When multiple ships holding 2,000 to 5,000 passengers dock at the same time, the ports are instantly flooded. If you head to major attractions simultaneously with thousands of other cruisers, you’ll find yourself stuck in a sea of tour buses.
- Limited Local Food Culture: Let’s be honest—Alaska isn’t world-renowned for its culinary scene. Because you only get a few hours to a day in port, and restaurants are small and flooded with tourists, lines get crazy and food is often overpriced. We grabbed fresh Alaskan crab legs in Juneau and seafood chowder in Sitka, but otherwise, we preferred snacking on-the-go or heading back to the ship for a late lunch.
- Rushed Port Time: You don’t get an immense amount of time to wander off the beaten path unless you plan your logistics carefully.

How to Beat the Crowds: My Top Tips
You can easily bypass the worst of the cruise ship gridlock with a little strategy:
- Get Off Early: In Ketchikan, we docked at 7:00 AM and were off the ship by 7:30 AM. We hit Creek Street and the salmon ladder by 7:40 AM, enjoying total peace before the crowds arrived. By afternoon, the street was shoulder-to-shoulder pack-jammed.
- Rent a Car for Flexibility: In Juneau, we walked about a mile to the local Avis office, rented a car, and completely broke away from the tour bus timetables. It allowed us to stagger our arrival at Mendenhall Glacier and explore far beyond the immediate port zone.

Part 2: Gluten-Free Cruising on Celebrity
If you’re eating gluten-free, stepping onto a massive cruise ship can feel a bit daunting. While Celebrity Cruises is definitely knowledgeable and aware of celiac disease and gluten sensitivities, it’s not entirely effortless—you have to put in a little work and ask questions.
Here is what you can expect across the ship:
1. The Oceanview Café (Buffet)
- The Good: There are designated signs marking gluten-free items, a dedicated gluten-free bread section, and a clearly labeled dessert area. You can also request gluten-free pasta and pizza if you ask the staff.
- The Catch: Labeling wasn’t always consistent. Some items that were obviously gluten-free lacked a tag, while others were explicitly marked. Just keep a sharp eye out and don’t hesitate to ask a chef behind the counter if you’re unsure.

2. The Cosmopolitan (Main Dining Room)
The formal dining room experience was stellar once we established a routine:
- The Waiter Connection: After our first night, I was seated in the same waiter’s section every evening. He quickly learned my allergy, brought me dedicated gluten-free bread alongside the regular bread basket for my family, and proactively pointed out safe options.
- The Menu Reality: Menus have gluten-free symbols next to select items. For things like burgers, items aren’t pre-labeled with a gluten-free accommodation, but the kitchen is happy to swap in a gluten-free bun if you explicitly ask.
- The Dessert Surprise: The dessert menu wasn’t marked, but my amazing waiter took care of it entirely—every night he would just say, “I’ll bring you the gluten-free special,” turning dessert into a fun, safe daily mystery!
- Breakfast Magic: If you go to the Cosmopolitan for breakfast, the staff can make incredible gluten-free French toast (on the spot) and gluten-free pancakes (though pancakes require a quick heads-up to your waiter the night before so they can prep the batter). They can even source gluten-free muffins straight to your table!

3. Drinks and Beverages
While they didn’t stock gluten-free beers on our sailing, they had an extensive range of alternative beverages, including a wide selection of wines, liquors, and custom cocktails that made ordering safe and easy.
Final Thoughts
An Alaskan cruise offers a comfortable, breathtaking way to take in glaciers and wildlife—provided you dodge the peak crowds with independent planning. Paired with Celebrity’s accommodating dining staff, a gluten-free traveler can easily navigate the high seas with just a little communication.
