We spent five days in Switzerland with my husband and his parents. We flew into Zurich and drove to Interlaken and Zermatt. This was the perfect itinerary to do a fully bollywood tour day to relive DDLJ in Switzerland!

Getting Around

We had a rental car to do this itinerary, and it was definitely easiest this way – but you could get around on trains as well! I would probably just change the amount of stops and you might not get to see all of these locations.

One Day Itinerary for DDLJ Filming Locations

We started our day in Interlaken – a great homebase for a day of Bollywood nostolgia.

Höheweg:

Along Höheweg you’ll find the Interlaken Promenade Fountain where Raj throws water at Simran and apologizes in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).

Yash Chopra Statue:

The bronze statue of legendary Indian filmmaker Yash Chopra stands in Höhematte Park in Interlaken. It is a symbol of his influence on Swiss tourism by making the country a highly desirable destination for Indian travelers, particularly through his iconic films like DDLJ and Chandni. Chopra famously established a dedicated ‘Bollywood route’ across Switzerland, which heavily showcased the Alps, lakes, and meadows, forever linking the romance of his cinema with the Swiss landscape.

Next Stop: Zweisimmen

This is a cute little town with a couple iconic scenes from DDLJ. First, head over to Zweisimmen station and recreate the scene where Simran miss her train which leads her to go on the road trip with Raj.

Then make your way to the souvenir kiosk right by the station and buy a Switzerland Cowbell. This is where scene where Raj goes to buy a knife and buys Simran a cowbell in DDLJ.

Next Stop: Saanen

Your next stop for more iconic DDLJ filming locations is – Saanen. First, swing by Saanen church, this beautiful white steeple church that Simran notices with Raj and wants to visit. You’ll notice this is the right church from the outside, but the inside is not the one portrayed in the movie. I’m not 100% sure where the inside of the church scene was filmed, but many blogs point to St. Grat Church, located in Montbovon.

Next, the ever iconic – Saanen Bridge!! This is one location that is marked as a DDLJ sight. This is the bridge from the famous scene where Raj tells Simran he loves her, and then later in the movie, this is where Simran and Raj are dancing.

After Raj tells Simran he loves her, Simran gets on the train at Saanen Train Station and Raj waits hoping she’ll look back. The scene where Simran asks Raj whether he wants to send a postcard is also filmed at the Saanen train station. You’ll likely see a famous GoldenPass Express train come through this station.

One more iconic sight located right here is the Saanen Airport. At the beginning of DDLJ, Raj is running next to a plane at this small local airstrip.

Afternoon in Gstaad:

You’re likely getting hungry now – so head over to Early Beck Cafe to grab some lunch. This is the cafe where during the song “Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main” Simran goes into a cafe and steals some chocolates. Then Raj ends up paying for the chocolates and then runs after her.

Gstaad has a lot of scenes during “Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main.” You can wander around the Gstaad Promenade lined with luxury shops and chalet style buildings.

Scenic Alps Views:

There are plenty of other scenes that take place in the beautiful countryside. I don’t have exact locations for these, but if you just drive through the Gstaad-Saanenland countryside – you’ll see these sights at every turn.
